Congress links Irani daughter to ‘illegal bar’, mantri hits back | India News

NEW DELHI/MARGAO: Congress on Saturday demanded that Union minister Smriti Irani be sacked, alleging that a response to an RTI query suggested that her daughter was running an “illegal bar” in Goa, after obtaining a “fake licence” for it.
Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera and the party’s Goa chief Amit Patkar made the allegations at separate press conferences, targeting Irani and her family. Calling it a “very serious issue”, Khera also shared a copy of the purported show cause notice given to the bar and alleged that the excise official who gave the notice is reportedly being transferred after pressure from the authorities.
In Margao, Patkar said the licence for the bar, purportedly run by the family of Irani at Assagao, was obtained fraudulently and demanded that Irani come clean on the issue.
“The applicant for the liquor licence generated an Aadhaar card on December 30, 2020; bought stamp papers the next day and applied for liquor licence; and filed an affidavit but failed to notarise it. A police report dated January 22, 2021, stated that the applicant isn’t a resident of Goa as claimed by him, but a resident of Vile Parle (E). The excise department ignored the report and issued two liquor licenses to the applicant, one for retail sale of IMFL and another for foreign liquor,” Patkar said.
He said on June 22, 2022, the applicant applied for renewal of the licence while a death certificate showed that he had died on May 17, 2021.
“We demand from the Prime Minister that Smriti Irani be immediately sacked as a minister from the Union cabinet. You owe it to this country, to the youth of this country,” Khera said. “Is this being done without her knowledge and was the licence given without her influence,” he asked.
Referring to the National Herald case against Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, Khera questioned, “…we want to ask her what problem do those running bars have with those running newspapers”.
BJP has been attacking the Gandhi family for their alleged role in the case, in which ED has has questioned Sonia and Rahul.
